I hope the new year is full of new beginings, new chances, and new opportunities to try things you've never done before. And I congradulate everyone on surviving another year on Earth. Make this next year count. Callie.

Simple ways to save the world
Alright guys, I decided I like using my blog to get messages out every once in a while, so I'll talk about global warming. I'm a big environmentalist, and I'm sure you probably think you've heard all this before but really, it's so simple to help the Earth.
1) Unplug things like cell phone chargers and laptop chargers when you aren't using them. Anything that's still plugged in takes energy, so even if it's off, if you don't use it that often, unplug it.
2) I like natural lighting, but of course electric lights are helpfull when there's not that much sunlight. Just remember to turn off the lights when you're done, even if you won't be gone long. Leaving electric appliances on when they aren't in use is a huge waste of energy.
3) Cut back on the beef. Cows eat a lot more grain than they produce meat, and clearing land for them to graze causes deforestation. It's healthier for you anyways. I love a good burger, but it's better to not have them that often.
4) RECYCLE!!! Americans create so much waste every day, several pounds of it. If everyone would recycle, we could turn all that junk into something useful. Instead of throwing away the paper you only used one side of and dooming it to a landfill, put it in the recycling and it can go to printing magazins and books. Also, if you have scraps of paper laying around, save them for things like math homework and writing down phone numbers and addresses. Anything can be useful, you just need to care enough.
5)Look for alternative fuel sorces. Fossil fuels create greenhouse gasses, which contribute to global warming. Nuclear energy is all good and fine, but as long as we just dump the radioactive waste anywhere, with little or no precautions, we could face some serious harm. It could wind up hurting us, or a lot of innocent wildlife and plants, depending on where we dump the stuff. It stays radioactive for years. Get involved with programs supporting solar and wind energy instead. It's good for the environment and we won't have to be dependant on anyone.
So please just take a little time put some effort. Its our world, the only home we have. It's not that hard to take care of if we really want to. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be living in a toxic waste dump anytime soon. Callie

School break blues
Ok, I love getting off from school. I love getting to sleep in and spend the days as I like for the most part. But I get bored. I mean, there is so much free time you run out of stuff to do. Hanging out with friends is fun, but sometimes you can't because they're busy, or you're busy or you don't have a ride, etc. Plus, sometimes you just need a break from your friends, and it can be hard being around the same person all the time. Books are great for people who love to read, but they get old and you wind up reading the same old story over and over. It's not something you do for hours and hours at a time. Video games also have the problem of something you can't do all day. Same thing with watching T.V., plus sometimes it's hard to find something good to watch. Eventually you run out of stuff to do, and you're sitting around all day bored. Thank goodness for the internet, I guess, because blogging seems to help keep me from this. The internet is always updating. Hey, I found something to do! Callie

The season of giving
In the holiday spirit, I want to tell you guys about the store I volunteer at. It's called Ten Thousand Villages, and they have stores across the U.S. and Canada. They are a fair-trade, non-profit organization. Basically, they have beautiful hand-made items, anything from jewlry to musical insturments to toys, that are made by artisans in third world nations. Basically, because the artisans can't sell their items in their countries, Ten Thousand Villages will take the goods, sell them at their stores over here, and all the money goes to the artisans. The artisans get all the money, aren't forced to work in sweatshop conditions, and are paied fairly and quickly. Sometimes, this is the only sorce of income the artisans have. They have a lot of great gifts for good prices, and if you're still looking for a few last minute gifts I recomend you stop by. Ten Thousand Villages has amazing items for sale and every purchase helps someone in need.

Procrastination
I think it's safe to say everyone procrastinates every now and then. I do it more than I should. It's definately not a good thing to procrastinate. You get behind in your work and you get into the habbit of being lazy. But I think it's alright to give yourself a little slack every now and then. I mean, no one can be expected to be all buisness all the time. All work and no play makes for a very dull world. So I think it's important to cut yourself a little slack every now and then, just make sure you get all your work done on time, hopefully not last minute. Doing things last minute only cause stress and poor work. It's easy to say "I've got plenty of time, I'll do that later." But later catches up with you a lot sooner than you expect. I don't know, I'm a big procrastinator and I think I tend to be less stressed when I give myself something like Friday nights where I do no school work and do only a few small and easy things on Saturday. Now I feel like I'm being preachy and telling people stuff they already know. Oh well, I'm just writing this so I can give myself a short break from studying for my last few finals. I did say I procrastinate too much. Callie
Happy Holidays!
Happy holidays to everyone! No matter what you celebrate that magical winter feeling is in the air, and with it the sound of commercials. I mean, turn on the T.V. and you get jingles to the tune of Christmas carols. Anyone looking for a place to shop for presents? Plenty of sales going on for cars, clothes (1 day sales, 12 hour sales, you name it) and, of course toys. I think the holidays should definately not be about getting great gifts, crazy sales and just flat out commercialising everything about the season.
Also, why is it always Merry Christmas you hear on T.V.? I personally celebrate Christmas, but I realise their are plenty of others who don't. I don't see anything wrong with "Happy Holidays" so everyone would feel more included. I guess I shouldn't speak for everyone, I just feel if you don't know your audience celebrates Christmas you shouldn't tell them all to enjoy that particular holiday.
Regardless, I hope everyone is enjoying this wounderful time of year. Because no matter what, it is a time to celebrate and be happy. Callie
